Production & Field Development

Turning discoveries into producing fields — fast, safely and for the long term.

Production

From discovery to first gas

EGAS reviews and approves development plans, oversees the joint operating companies that run Egypt's gas fields, and works with partners to keep production flowing from both new and mature assets.

Joint operating companies such as Petrobel and Burullus bring together EGAS and international operators to drill, build and run offshore and onshore facilities. EGAS follows each project from concept selection to start-up and monitors reservoir performance throughout the field's life.

The Zohr super-giant went from discovery in 2015 to first gas in December 2017, setting a global benchmark for time-to-production. Today the focus is on new phases, subsea tie-backs and development drilling that add volumes quickly through existing infrastructure.

Our role

Managing fields across their life

EGAS combines technical review with partner oversight to maximise recovery and value from every field.

Development plans

Technical and economic review of development concepts before approval.

Development drilling

Follow-up of drilling campaigns that add new wells and sustain plateau rates.

Subsea tie-ins

Connecting new discoveries to existing platforms, pipelines and plants.

Reservoir management

Monitoring pressure, water and well performance to optimise recovery.

Joint operating companies

Board-level oversight of budgets, work programmes and performance.

Development in practice

New wells, sustained output
01

Drilling

New wells, sustained output

Development drilling onshore and offshore offsets natural decline in mature fields and brings new reservoir compartments into production.

Faster gas through existing facilities
02

Tie-backs

Faster gas through existing facilities

Subsea wells and short flowlines connect discoveries to existing platforms and onshore plants, cutting time and cost compared with stand-alone developments — the model behind fast-track projects such as Nooros.

Processing

From wellhead to grid

Onshore plants such as the Zohr gas plant near Port Said treat raw gas and recover condensate before delivery into the national grid.

Field lifecycle

How a discovery becomes a producing field

01

Step 1

Appraisal

Appraisal wells and studies confirm the size and quality of the discovery.

02

Step 2

Development plan

The operator proposes a development concept, reviewed and approved by EGAS.

03

Step 3

Execution

Wells are drilled and facilities built under the joint operating company.

04

Step 4

Start-up

First gas flows to the plant and into the national grid.

05

Step 5

Optimisation

New phases, infill wells and compression extend plateau and field life.
