Agreements, Research & Exploration

Opening Egypt's gas acreage to the world through clear agreements, competitive bid rounds and sound geoscience.

Upstream

Where every discovery begins

EGAS offers gas exploration acreage, negotiates and manages concession agreements with international and local companies, and follows every exploration programme from the first seismic line to the first discovery.

The Mediterranean deep water, the Nile Delta and the Western Desert host Egypt's most prolific gas basins. Since 2015, discoveries led by Zohr, Nooros, Atoll and Baltim South West have shown how much potential remains — and how quickly it can be unlocked with the right partners and terms.

Behind every round of offers stands a research effort: regional geological studies, reprocessing of legacy seismic data and new multi-client surveys that reduce risk for investors and highlight new plays.

Where every discovery begins

What we do

From open acreage to signed agreements

The sector combines commercial, legal and technical expertise to attract investment and keep exploration moving.

Agreement management

Following work programmes, approving budgets and handling amendments, extensions and relinquishments.

Seismic surveys

2D and 3D acquisition and reprocessing to image deep and complex reservoirs.

Geological research

Basin modelling and play studies that identify new exploration opportunities.

Where we explore

Deep-water frontier
01

Mediterranean

Deep-water frontier

Giant discoveries in the Shorouk, North Damietta and West Delta Deep Marine concessions established the Eastern Mediterranean as a world-class gas province. Exploration continues in the ultra-deep west and the frontier blocks of the north.

Mature basin, new ideas
02

Nile Delta

Mature basin, new ideas

Reprocessed 3D seismic and deeper targets beneath producing fields keep the onshore and shallow-water Delta attractive, with fast tie-backs to existing infrastructure.

Onshore scale and speed
03

Western Desert

Onshore scale and speed

Short onshore cycle times and an established gas network make the Western Desert a steady source of new discoveries, from deep gas plays to near-field opportunities.

How it works

From bid round to discovery

01

Step 1

Bid round

EGAS offers exploration blocks with data packages through an international bid round.

02

Step 2

Evaluation & award

Bids are evaluated against published criteria such as work programme and signature bonus.

03

Step 3

Agreement & ratification

The concession agreement is negotiated, signed and issued by law before work begins.

04

Step 4

Exploration period

The contractor acquires seismic and drills wells while EGAS follows commitments and budgets.

05

Step 5

Discovery & development lease

A commercial discovery leads to a development lease and the start of field development.

Exploration questions

Quick answers for companies interested in Egyptian gas acreage.

What is a concession agreement?

It is the contract between the Egyptian state, EGAS and one or more contractors that grants exploration rights over an area and sets the work commitments, duration and fiscal terms.

How can I access technical data?

Seismic, well and regional data packages are made available to registered companies through the sector's digital upstream platform, in line with the terms of each bid round.

Can areas be obtained outside a bid round?

In some cases areas may be awarded through direct negotiation. Contact the business development team to discuss your interest.
