Climate & Emissions

Ending routine flaring, abating methane and producing gas with the smallest possible carbon footprint.

Climate

Natural gas with the smallest possible footprint

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel — and we are determined to produce and deliver it as cleanly as the world's best operators.

Most of the sector's avoidable emissions come from a small number of sources: routine flaring of associated gas, venting and fugitive methane, and inefficient energy use in plants and compressor stations. Our programme targets each of them, in support of Egypt's National Climate Change Strategy 2050.

Every tonne of gas recovered instead of flared is both an emissions reduction and additional energy for the Egyptian market.

Programmes

Where we focus

Flaring reduction

Gas recovery projects capture associated gas that was once burned.

Methane abatement

Leak detection and repair campaigns across plants and pipelines.

Venting elimination

Redesigning equipment and procedures to avoid cold venting during operations and maintenance.

Energy efficiency

Upgrading compressors, turbines and heaters to use less fuel per unit of gas delivered.

Measurement & reporting

Moving from estimates to measured data, consistent with international methane reporting frameworks.

International cooperation

Working with partners and multilateral institutions on technology and finance for emissions reduction.

Emissions management in action

Turning waste gas into supply
01

Flare gas recovery

Turning waste gas into supply

Flare gas recovery units and new gathering connections route associated gas into processing plants, in line with the World Bank's Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative.

Finding and fixing leaks faster
02

Methane

Finding and fixing leaks faster

Periodic leak detection and repair surveys using optical gas imaging, together with continuous monitoring on major facilities, reduce fugitive methane across the network.

Aligning with international best practice
03

Partnerships

Aligning with international best practice

We cooperate with international partners and initiatives such as the World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Partnership (GFMR) and engage with the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) reporting framework.

Our approach

Measure, reduce, verify

01

Step 1

Inventory

Map every emission source across fields, plants and pipelines.

02

Step 2

Measure

Replace estimates with direct measurement at the largest sources.

03

Step 3

Reduce

Prioritise projects by emissions avoided and gas recovered.

04

Step 4

Verify & report

Track results against targets and disclose them annually.
