Energy Transition

Natural gas as the partner of renewables — preparing Egypt's gas system for hydrogen, cleaner transport and a low-carbon future.

Transition fuel

Gas and renewables, working together

As Egypt expands solar and wind power, flexible gas-fired generation keeps the grid stable when the sun sets and the wind drops.

Natural gas emits significantly less carbon dioxide than coal or liquid fuels when used for power, and almost none of the particulates that harm air quality. Replacing heavier fuels with gas in power stations, industry, homes and vehicles is one of the fastest ways to cut emissions today.

At the same time, EGAS is preparing its infrastructure and skills for the fuels of tomorrow, from low-carbon hydrogen to renewable power for our own facilities.

Gas and renewables, working together

Transition levers

Four ways gas enables the transition

Firm power for renewables

Flexible gas generation balances variable solar and wind output.

Hydrogen readiness

Assessing hydrogen blending and the role of gas infrastructure in low-carbon fuels.

Solar power for gas facilities
01

Renewables

Solar power for gas facilities

Pilot projects power compressor stations and plants with on-site solar, cutting operational emissions and freeing more gas for the market.

Hydrogen

Preparing the grid for hydrogen

Studies with international partners assess hydrogen blending in the gas network and the role of Egypt's LNG terminals and ports in exporting green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels.

Natural gas on Egypt's roads
03

Clean transport

Natural gas on Egypt's roads

A national programme converts taxis, microbuses and private cars to compressed natural gas and expands the network of filling stations, reducing fuel costs and urban air pollution.

Gas for a region in transition

Regional hub

Gas for a region in transition

With the Idku and Damietta liquefaction plants and the East Mediterranean Gas Forum headquartered in Cairo, Egypt connects regional gas resources to markets seeking lower-carbon alternatives to coal and oil.

Milestones

Building the foundations of the transition

  1. 2015

    Zohr discovered

Eni's discovery of the supergiant Zohr field transforms Egypt's gas outlook.

    Zohr discovered
  2. 2017

    First gas from Zohr

Zohr begins production in December, strengthening domestic supply.

  3. 2019

    Regional cooperation

The East Mediterranean Gas Forum is launched with its headquarters in Cairo.

  4. 2022

    COP27 in Egypt

Egypt hosts the UN climate conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, putting flaring, methane and energy transition on the national agenda.

    COP27 in Egypt
The transition is not a choice between gas and renewables. Egypt needs both — and EGAS is building the system that connects them.
